In Part One: The Vulgar Lyre, The Fork is Chosen is a riddle about the various
intriguing relationships between the people of Europe at this time, especially those who are part of the royal courts. This riddle says that the actions and lies of each person to another is fine as long as each person knows the actions are false and they are being lied to. The Crawford of Lymond is symbolic of the fork, as his part in the story is to meddle and spy in the lives of all involved in this story.
