Cecilia and Edmund serve as the symbolic equivalents of Hallam and Tennyson, Cecilia standing for Tennyson, since she is his blood relative, and since he has most often depicted himself as the wife: and it should be noticed that it is Cecilia's "I will," in one sense dependent and responsive, but in another final and conclusive, which actually rivets the unbreakable link. And by then the poem has become Tennyson's "I will."
