Elyot stated in Act II that he believed that life is not meant to be taken seriously. Despite Victor's best attempts to draw him out, Elyot stands by his belief that anger, bluster, and violence will get them nowhere. He knows that he and Amanda are in the wrong and feels that nothing will come out of belaboring the point through words or fists.
