Why does Elyot say that, despite their current happiness, being separated was probably for the best?

Elyot believes that the time helped them mature and mellow out. After five years of not being together, it seems they have been able to put some distance between their petty jealousies of their previous marriage. Also, it seems that the separation only sharpened how desperately they love each other.
