What is Amanda's outlook on the violence in her previous marriage that is so shocking to Victor?

Victor is appalled to hear that Elyot had previously struck Amanda and wishes that he could avenge her honor. Amanda assures him that she hit him back and does not seem at all fazed by being slapped before. She is very dismissive about the slapping and does not seem to understand Victor's indignation.
