Tradition versus Modern Morals is a recurring idea. Part of Sultana's argument in this book is that the strict traditions of the Muslim faith have not changed even though the world around them has. Sultana believes that the traditions of her country were based in realistic and moral bases. There was once a time when a woman did require the strength of a man to protect her from the sexual and physical advantage most men had over them. However, in the modern world women and men are on a more equal level. Men can no longer rape a woman and claim the sight of her skin drove him over the edge. The modern world has laws against these actions.
