Elizabeth and Darcy are equals in many ways. First, they both come from well to do families, though Darcy's is better off than Elizabeth's. Both are strictly adherent to the Victorian ways of viewing marriage and gender defined roles. And, both seem to rebel as much as they dare against those Victorian codes of behavior. On a deeper level, they are both equally at a loss as to how to reconcile their emotions for one another and the expectations they have as far as a future mate is concerned.
