My neighborhood is made of love, but it's money and buildings and food and jobs that keep it alive -- and even I have to admit that the new people moving in, with their extra money and dreams, can sometimes make things better.
-- Zuri Benitez (Chapter 4)
Importance: Zuri's statement about her neighborhood shows her mixed feelings regarding the gentrification process underway in Bushwick: on the one hand, she resents it but feels forced to admit that it could ever have a positive effect. On the other hand, she thinks that Bushwick as a neighborhood of love can withstand any gentrification because it is made of love. So, gentrification becomes both the glue which holds the neighborhood together by giving it more economic staying power and also the knife which cuts it up into pieces, since it brings outsiders and unknown things into the residents' midst.
