Who is Maddy from Pretties and what is their importance?

Maddy, a physician, once lived in the city. When Maddy and her husband, Az, however, discovered the lesions that were purposely given to pretties during their initial surgeries, they escaped the city and began the Smoke. Maddy and Az worked for many years trying to find a cure for the lesions. After Special Circumstances came to the Smoke, Maddy found the cure, but had no one to test it on. For this reason, Tally agreed to become a pretty and test the cure. Unfortunately, no one ever told Tally how the cure worked and she shared it with Zane, causing the cure to eat up Zane's brain while nothing happened to Tally's brain.
