The story of the cave creates a break in the heightening action of the plot. Just as the characters are about to all come together for the final battle, the plot, metaphorically, takes a deep breath. The reader is drawn into the past, and away from the tension, for a brief intermission before all hell breaks loose. In other words, the reader is held in suspense.
