Who is Aesculapius from Pope Joan and what is their importance?

Aesculapius is a Greek scholar, Aesculapius stops by the Canon's home for a visit and discovers Joan's talents, taking her under his wing and teaching her the wisdom of reason and logic, as well as religion. He is a huge influence in Joan's life. Although his beliefs are considered radical, his scholarly talents land him a job in the Bishop's school.
