Chapter Seven, To a God Unknown, details the narrator's deep connection with a storm that continues to gather against the mountains beyond her window. She narrator was sitting in a bath, relaxing before going out, and decided to open the window and let the air in. She storm blew in a perfectly square leaf that floated on the water between her knees. The narrator feels deeply connected to the storm outside and notes that, although powerful, there is no anger or rage in this storm. It recurs on the mountains, and the narrator feels like the mountains welcomes the storm's return. Her mind wanders to men from her past while she glances over at her Japanese screens covered with dresses she is about to put on.
