Why does Grenouille kill to preserve scent?

Grenouille has an extraordinary power to discern odors. Ironically he has no scent himself. He has an obsession with collecting smells, especially of women. Smothering a girl to death, he drinks her scent in. After that he cannot get enough of female scent.
