The novel is divided into 31 chapters of varying lengths. Each chapter is identified by number and title. The titles have something to do with the events of that chapter, meaning each title serves as foreshadowing though the meanings are typically obscure until the events take place. For example, Chapter 28 is titled “Then They Must Forfeit.” In this chapter, Talia is injured when she and Rowan combine their magic which means Talia cannot continue with the Gauntlet. Igraine says the rules say the tiebreaker has to take place at once. Because Talia's family is needed to save Talia, Igraine says the Avramov family has to forfeit. Once she makes that statement, the reader will understand the meaning of the chapter title.
