How is the atmosphere around dinner described in “Every Single Surviving Word"?

The atmosphere during dinner is tense. Tito Maning is strict and terse and initially irritated for having to wait for Jay to arrive at the table. He then criticizes Jay and his family for various flaws and gets angry when Jay attempts to leave the table without being excused.
