The setting of this novel works well with the plot. At first, the reader is not aware that Mia is learning to juggle her princess duties, duties as student body president and having a relationship with a college boyfriend. However, as events unfold, her transition is a constant part of the plot, the lives of the characters and even the outcome of the novel.
