The stage is empty, without curtain or scenery. As the audience settles into their seats, the Stage Manager enters and begins placing some chairs downstage, to signify the Webb and Gibbs kitchens. When the house lights have gone down, the Stage Manager introduces the play, acknowledging the author and the cast and crew. He begins to describe Grover's Corners, New Hampshire.
