Norrie Beach, California, is the town on the west coast that Oliver Lime exiles himself to after leaving Mallow Island to escape his mother. Though elements of Norrie Beach, including the Rondo, the hotel that Oliver seeks work at, are reminiscent of Mallow Island, there is a built-up, commercial shallowness to Norrie Beach that fails to mask its inauthentic attempt at becoming a southern gothic resort town. The characters located in Norrie Beach—Garland, Heathers One and Two, Cooper, and Roy—are locked in a lifestyle of social climbing and backstabbing that Oliver does not particularly fit into and which imbues the town with a false edge. In many respects, it serves as a contrast or foil to Mallow Island.
