In the novel, music symbolizes uncertainty and the struggle of one’s internal desires. For example, when listening to songs by John Legend, Michael thinks about his own uncertainties in his relationship with Melissa; he loves her, but their relationship is deteriorating. Similarly, when Michael and Melissa see a concert together, the concert makes them sad and even more unsure about the stability of their relationship.
