Why was Emil Brandt unable to work when he returned from serving in WWII in the novel, Ordinary Grace?

When Emil Brandt returned from serving in the military in World War II, he was blind and had a horribly scarred face. He was unable to work because of his disabilities although he still played piano and composed some music.
