Russell uses language as a subtle reflection of her subject matter and themes. In the story, The Bad Graft, words like “dormancy” (51) and “incubation” (53) are used to describe the life cycle of the tree living in Angie's mind, and similes like “Her ears pricked up like sharp leaves, alert for moisture” (55) are overt descriptions of how she is being affected by her verdant invader.
