While Belle is willing to pay a tremendous amount of money for her children to go to a private preschool, even she seems to be aware that maneuvering one's child into the highly selective preschool is merely an empty status symbol (54-59). Belle's description of the Thursday morning chapel service tellingly focuses on the other parents whose kids are at the preschool, an indication that the preschool is simply an opportunity for the rich parents to measure themselves against each other.
