How does the author use foreshadowing in Open City: A Novel?

In Chapter Three, we learn that it is possible that Julius is estranged from his mother because his mother is also estranged from her own mother. Since Julius's mother can tell him is his grandmother is still alive, it foreshadows Julius reconnecting with his mother so that he can reconnect with his grandmother.
