Why does Oona often change her hair color in the novel, Oona Out of Order?

The author uses hair dye to symbolize when Oona is in denial. In 1991 Oona is falsely convinced that she can outrun her problems. She dyes her hair to look like a different person because she wants to be a different person. Later in the novel, Oona dyes her hair before meeting Kenzie. Madeleine warned her that she could not be a part of his life but Oona did not believe her. Oona slathers her hair in black dye and creates a disguise to meet her son.
