What is the significance of the author switching to third-person narration in the last chapter?

In the last chapter, we see that the narrator point of view switches from Andy's point of view to the author's. This switch allows the author an opportunity to look at the fire, and the story's conclusion, from a broader perspective.... that of an outsider looking in.
