Why is the soldier Claude sees on the street referred to as "the lost American" in the novel, One of Ours?

The doctors refer to the man Claude sees on the street as "the lost American," because he cannot remember who is lover is from day to day. In this way, the lost American comes to symbolize all the men who died in the war and will never experience the beautiful things of everyday life (such as love).
