What metaphors are used in One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus?

May's diary entry on November 5th appears to be metaphorical - the calm before the storm, as the snow spreads like an army. Although May describes the tipi as snug and warm, she also sees it as confining. The lack of activity and social contact also seem to be making her anxious.
