In Chapter 19, what is Bri so upset that her mother had to do in order to help them afford food?

In Chapter 19, Bri is so upset that her mother had to apply for EBT benefits - a form of food stamps, or welfare benefits - because she knows her mother would only do that as a last resort. It also meant that Jay had to drop out of school to qualify for the benefits, and Bri is very upset that their family situation has become this dire.
