King believes that adverbs, especially those ending in -ly, tend to do the thinking for the reader. They do this by emphasizing written words that are seldom used in speech. If the student is familiar with Strunk and White's Elements of Style, they may quote the section which claims that putting -ly on other words is similar to putting a hat on a horse.
