King is trying to tell the aspiring writer to write naturally--honestly. He doesn't believe the writer should strive for an academic knowledge of grammar or an especially learned vocabulary. He should write naturally--what he knows--and not try to sound learned simply to impress the reader. If the writer writes from the perspective of trying to impress the reader with his knowledge and astuteness, then the writer will sound artificial and not find his voice. His writing will not be honest. If the writer writes from the fear of displeasing his audience, then his writing will not be honest nor will he have achieved his true voice.
