In the chapter, What Writing Is, King touches on the theme of writing as a career versus writing as a passion. King frequently urges his readers to take writing seriously. In my opinion, he is trying to say that writing is a passion and not something that you can do only for a career. To do so would indicate a lack of success as a writer.
