For centuries, the Taino lived in small organized communities. In 1508 Ponce de Leon arrive and robbed and cheated the Taino of their land and freedom. He made them slaves of the Spanish. Africans were brought as slaves to work. That led to a mix of Taino, Spanish, and African blood. In 1527 was the first slave rebellion. In 1848 the first revolt. In 1898 they became an independent nation, but then the U.S. annexed the land.
