Why does Alonzo view himself as a "token" on the Teen Justice Force in the story, The Token Superhero, from Octavia’s Brood?

Almost as soon as Alonzo joins the force, he feels isolated and alienated. He is also the only black individual on the force, making him a token. He is then given a superhero name entirely unrelated to his character or powers. They call him Black Fist.
