The novel's main conflict revolves around the relationship of Miss Narwin and Phillip. Phil doesn't like Miss Narwin and blames her because he doesn't make the track team. Miss Narwin, on the other hand, sees a young man who is full of promise..... someone she cannot seem to help, as well as someone who does not want her help.
