What happened to Crowville? Why did this happen?

The white people near the area were furious at the Crowville blacks for "acting white", and one day when a rich black man, John Lowdins, bought a car and drove it to Crowville, a drunk white man attacked him. Lowdins shot him in the shoulder and drove off. That night the white people came in, evicted the blacks of Crowville and burned down their town. The whites wanted to destroy what progress the blacks had made.
