How does Sandy react to Tempy's gift? Why does he react this way?

On Christmas Day, Tempy comes over and gives them presents. Tempy gave Sandy a beautiful book of Andersen's Fairy Tales but Sandy is so upset by how nice it is that he throws it under the stove. He is upset that she can give him something beautiful, but it is the only nice thing he has. He can hardly stand to look at it.
