How does Sandy come to the decision to get his education? How does this change his mind?

Sandy started to find work at the hotel monotonous. He decided for himself that he would be like Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington and get his education despite being impoverished. This boring work made him realize that he could do more with his life and the talents he was given.
