How does Aunt Hager react to Harriet and Sandy going to a dance? Why does she react this way?

When they got home, Aunt Hager was sitting on the front step with a bundle of switches at her feet. She beat them for their behavior. She reacted this way first, because they disobeyed her and second, because she does not feel that Harriet's friends are good for either Harriet or Sandy.
