The direction of north is a symbol of Leif's willingness to follow instructions, even when he knows the instruction is not really reasonable. Old Carl told Leif to go north because he considered that to be the place Leif and Little Carl might be safe from the death ship. Leif later realizes that north is a direction – not a destination. He continues to travel north until he reaches the open sea and is forced to turn back.
