What does Tom's Affair represent?

Tom had an affair when with his current partner when Tessa was pregnant. His affair symbolizes the notion that Tessa's fears and worries are destructive. Tom is not a bad man. He is still with the woman he had the affair with, and he takes an active role in raising Finn. He does not share the same fears about Finn growing up in Northern Ireland that Tessa has. His affair also symbolizes the need to connect with people who act. His partner takes an active role in caring for her father who has MS.
