What is the theme in North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell?

Sickness and death are both themes in this story. One reason Milton is such a hard place to survive is that everywhere you look there is either death or sickness. The characters blame it on the air and factory conditions, but there is also an element of only the strongest will survive.
