Throughout the novel reading represents the individual's search for meaning. One of the first things Marianne and Connell find they have in common is their love for literature. This similarity links them over the course of their amorphous relationship. Their perpetual eagerness to learn about the world through books mirrors their continual desire to decipher the truth of their relationship and their identities.
