Another theme in the book is Sully's relationship with rub. One of the pervading themes of the book is Sully's relationship with Rub. Sully is very mean to Rub and basically treats him like an old rag. He frequently makes Rub wait out in the cold. This happens several times at Hattie's diner and also when Sully is talking to Will in the car and does not let Rub in. Many times Sully just dismisses Rub when he is finished with him which is what causes the situation that results in Sully's arrest. Rub is used to having Sully to himself and telling him of his hopes and dreams. Sully just ignores him and considers his chattering as background music.
