Comment on paradoxical relationship between O’Brien and Winston.

The reason that O'Brien has kept Winston alive are the same reasons Winston would have been vaporized for a long time ago. O'Brien loves Winston's intellect yet wants to destroy it. At times during Winston's "re-education" ,O'Brien is both saviour and torturer to Winston. O'Brien is the only person that can stop the pain that he (O'Brien) inflicts on Winston.
