What does Sergio see when he is on his way home on September 11 and he joins other kids on a metal fence?

Sergio sees boys on a metal fence straining to see what is going on. He climbs up and he can see hundreds of people running across the bridge into Brooklyn. Everyone--white and black--is white with the ashes of the dead covering them.
