Why does Stan make a hasty exit from the Pelican Club in the novel, Nightmare Alley?

When Stan sees two men in suits talking to the manager at the Pelican Club, he is certain that they've been sent by Grindle to arrest him, so he makes a hasty exit. In reality, the two men had no connection to Grindle and no interest in Stan.
