In "Half-Life," how do David's mother and grandmother seem to feel about him?

Both women clearly love David, because his mother lets him live with her and his grandmother still wants him to visit and tries to give him affectionate advice. But they also see that he is doing little with his life and feel disappointed by the many times he has let them down. David's mother seems resigned to his behavior, as she barely responds when he makes and breaks promises and does not press him for the truth after he breaks into his grandmother's house.
