In "Earth, Speak," how does a comment from Tabitha seem paradoxical to David?

When he is in line behind Tabitha at the methadone clinic, she tells him that he is "nothing" (209). Later, when he is thinking about how easily the tribe's precious history might be stolen from the museum, he feels puzzled that people could be worth so much and be "nothing" at the same time.
