In the beginning of "Smokes Last," what is ironic about David's mother's instructions to him before he leaves to play in the woods with his friends?

David's mother tells him "Don't come home blind" before he leaves to go play the stick battle game in the woods with JP and Tyson (141). Ironically, he comes close to being blinded in one eye during the game, when Tyson throws a stick intended for JP but it strikes David close to his eye and causes a serious cut.
