What happens to Carmody after he takes the "Chance" in the novel, Night of Light?

Carmody takes the Chance in hopes of assassinating Yess, the Christ-like son of Mother Boonta. Instead, he undergoes a cleansing and rebirth and becomes the father of Yess's next incarnation.
